Watchmen Review [2]
Posted by Joseph Lee on 03.08.2009

Starring:
Patrick Wilson as Daniel Dreiberg/Nite Owl II
Jackie Earle Haley as Walter Kovacs/Rorschach
Malin Akerman as Laurie Juspeczyk / Silk Spectre II
Billy Crudup as Dr. Jon Osterman / Doctor Manhattan
Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake / The Comedian

Story: A masked vigilante named Rorschach investigates the death of former superhero The Comedian, and it's ties to a conspiracy to take out other former heroes to prevent them from stopping a nuclear war.

Fun Trivia: During early development in the early 1990s, mainly focused around the screenplay by Sam Hamm, early casting rumors included Robin Williams as Rorschach, Jamie Lee Curtis as Silk Spectre, Gary Busey as the Comedian, and both Richard Gere and Kevin Costner considered for the role of NiteOwl. The project underwent numerous rewrites under director Terry Gilliam and his collaborator Charles McKeown, but got eventually shelved by Warner Bros.

Watchmen. A graphic novel that was hailed as one of the best of all time is finally a movie. After being in development hell for over twenty years, with numerous directors trying to turn it into a film, it's Zack Snyder that finally was able to put something together. Only being a new fan of Watchmen, I may not be as hardcore as some, but I still loved the graphic novel and Snyder's vision tells me that he clearly did as well. He turned the "unfilmable" into a fantastic film.

If you're a fan of Watchmen, there is enough of the source material here to please you. Snyder translates panel-by-panel, sometimes at the risk of losing the general audience, most of the graphic novel. He cuts some things, or makes some minor alterations to make it more accessible, but it would have to be changed in order to be adapted. The one major change, works better than it's source material, which, let's face it, was silly and the one major detriment of Alan Moore's original work. You can feel the love of the material in Snyder's film, as he clearly grew up with Watchmen and tried his best to make sure that other fans would receive a film worthy of their love. Even the social commentary from the graphic novel is here, and it's just as applicable today as it was then. It's never preachy and it works just fine.

For the non-fans, there's a lot to enjoy here as well. It's very faithful to it's source material but at the same time, it never feels hard to follow. Even with it's long run time and the amount of material shoved into it, it all flows together nicely and I never had any problems with the pacing. The majority of the main characters get the proper buildup in flashbacks and storytelling, even The Comedian. While non-fans should read the source material, it's not necessary before or after viewing this film. It works great on it's own and that's what a film adaptation should do.

The performances vary from excellent to average. Malin Akerman is probably the worst of the bunch, but she's not bad enough to bring the movie down. If anything, the strength of her fellow cast members make her wavering performance seem unnoticeable. Patrick Wilson does great as the second Nite Owl, providing the only real "everyman" character of the film. He is the glue that holds the entire film together. Jeffery Dean Morgan and Matthew Goode bring fine performances as well. However, it's Billy Crudup and Jackie Earle Haley who give the best showings here as Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach, respectively. Crudup is able to play to a god, who just can't seem to grasp what it means to be human like he used to. He nails all of the subtleties of the character. Haley plays the sociopath Rorschach as well as everyone hoped, and I can't imagine anyone else doing better. Haley was Rorschach. He lived the character in this film.

The direction of Zack Snyder may be questionable for some, but most should have expected the slow motion from the trailers and his previous film 300. I didn't have a problem with it. It enhances the action sequences it needed to and doesn't detract from anything. He also provides beautiful cinematography, with astounding special effects. This was needed to bring this world to life and he didn't disappoint. From the red planet of Mars to Vietnam flashbacks, everything looks spectacular. The fact that it also relies on the strong story and performances, and not the glossy look, is a bonus.

If I had any problems with Watchmen, they were incredibly minor. The makeup in some places feels flawed, in the case of Richard Nixon and the original Silk Spectre. Nixon looks like a caricature with a gigantic nose and I don't see why they couldn't have just cast an older woman to play the older Silk Spectre. The makeup looked incredibly silly and would take me out of the film for a moment. Aside from that, I also hated the song at the end of the credits, which was a cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row", by My Chemical Romance of all people. It was possibly one of the worst cover songs I've ever heard.

Some minor (and they're very minor) problems aside, this adaption of Watchmen is the best that the fans are going to get, and it's still an epic, beautiful comic book movie. Like Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight before him, Zack Snyder has helped redefine what a movie based on a comic book should be. Go see this, and of course, read the source material if you haven't already.

The 411Watchmen takes what many called "unfilmable" and turns it into an epic superhero tale. Zack Snyder translates the beloved graphic novel and makes a masterpiece of a comic book movie. Like it's source material, it's unflinching, uncompromising and beautiful. Snyder also includes the appropriate social commentary, action sequences and everything worthy of it's R-rating in order to please both fans and non-fans alike. For my money, Watchmen is an instant classic.

I had no desire to see this at all...and was pleasantly surpirsed by the first 2 hours of the movie. Then it ground to a halt. I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Well said, Joseph! Just got back from seeing it and I can't help but agree. A fantastic piece of work that didn't feel boring for one second. I was indifferent with the song at the end, but I'd be remiss in not mentioning that the opening credits was one of the best sequences I've ever seen for a film...

The movie was done as well as it possibly could, and I give kudos to Snyder and the cast for making a great movie. Still, it just doesn't quite stand up to the comics, which should be expected. If you loved this movie and haven't read the books, do yourself and check them out, it's the same stuff but so much more

It was really slow, kinda boring, and all depth was missing from the action and dialogue. Just because you're lifting dialogue and visuals from the comic book, doesn't mean you're being true to the source material.

I didn't hate the film. I just found myself not caring much. Well, that's not true, I found myself cracking up at the unintentional comedy and frustrated with the over-the-top and often senseless violence in the film. But I don't think that's what Zack Snyder was trying to convey.

This movie will likely break some records and be considered a financial and commercial success, then much like 300, no one will care much a few months later.

Um it shouldn't. It was one of the worst movies i've been too. But i guess geeky fan boys love it. And what was with that ridiculous sex scene. I mean seriously was that nessecary? ok come on and trash me fan boys and your gay remarks about me not liking the sex scene. Somebody will agree with me on this one.

How is it just geeky fan boys, i think your just one of the dumb ass's who went into the movie thinking that it was going to be like a batman movie but thats not what its about. It is one of the most celibrated Novels of all time not graphic novels NOVELs its not just fanboys. it was a movie that was made for people hwo have read the book if you didn't read it read it then re see it

It was a very good movie, but it's hard to care for a bunch of douches.

My only real complaints about the movie were some of the soundtrack choices. Hallelujah made an already fairly cheesy scene over the top and All Along The Watchtower, I felt, didn't suit that part of the movie at all.

Still, great movie. Second best comic book movie ever, just behind The Dark Knight.

Alright, I know some people will find what I'm about to say to be balsphemous, but I found the graphic novel kinda boring.....Yes, I did. A bit overrated if you ask me. But, the movie I found excellent.

It was more like I saw a comic book than a movie, even more so than Sin City, which is very strange, seeing as Sin City was virtually word for word, page for page, the same as the novel. But this was really just a work of art, which I have never said about another movie. For the most part, this review is excellent, and the ONLY thing I would disagree with is the score. I'd give it a 10.

Great great movie. Snyder had me paying attention to him with Dawn of the Dead. Had me hooked with 300. This put him as one of my favorites. Super talented director that's gonna really keep people on their toes this next decade.

My only complaint is that at two hours and change this movie is to long for me to justify watching it multiple times.

that's really a rather minor complaint though.

Surveyed a bunch of friends who saw it and read the graphic novel, everyone pretty much agreed 7 out of 10. C-. I agree with some that the soundtrack was tacky, there are only so many times I can hear Jimi Hendrix in a movie, they should have used the Smashing Pumpkins and Muse songs from the preview, the Muse song when they first take out the ride. Woulda got goosebumps. Mathew Goode was pretty bad in my opinion and he had too big of a role to mess up. Nixon looked dumb. The good things were the direction of the action scenes, the cinematography, and the story.

The over the top sex scene was necessary to show how Silk Spectre felt more connected to the Nite Owl because it did not seem like he was disconnected from her like Dr. Manhattan.

Posted By: Nick (Guest)  on March 08, 2009 at 03:18 PM

The movie wasn't too bad. Rorschach is really cool and will probably be the character people like the most, as was when this was released in the '80s.

I just kept feeling bored in some parts of the movie, though to be fair, I thought the graphic novel dragged in some spots as well.

Definitely not a bad movie, but I'd still say The Dark Knight is better. Then again, I'm one of those people that prefers The Dark Knight Returns to Watchmen, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

I knew it, I knew fan boys would try to defend this retard of a movie. We already knew he was connected to her. And no i didn't go in there thinking it would be the dark knight like some previous commentor said. I knew it would it would be average because of the trailer. I was just surprised it was that boring. But what ever. And guess what. I'm one of your geeky fan boys. Since i've read the comic book and a fan of the graphic novel. So eat me. I should have expected this.

Didn't enjoy.. too long had, didnt care bout the characters.... but I could understand why fanboys loving it. Whoever said the sex scene was ridiculous I actually do agree.

I give it a 7 out of 10. Was good, not great. I thought the sex scenes were a bit ridiculous.

I agree that it is a fine Novel, but I don't think it means that it should translate all that well into a movie. I only watched it because my BOY D. Hayter wrote part of the script.

The term "fanboys" has officially jumped the shark.

Also, the term "jumping the shark" has jumped the shark.

Of course people were going to defend it. They like the film (I loved it by the way), and your reasoning was poorly thought out and even more poorly worded.

I'm tired of this bias against people who are fans of something. Every person on here who calls people "fanboys" as an insult probably have something in their lives they're just as big a fan of. It's only human to enjoy things, you people act like it's a bad thing to be a fan of something.

That film was absolutely 100% shite. What a waste of money. The only thing wrong with it was the whole movie itself- apart from that it was fine- the trailers were good, the ads were funny. The film? Well that was trash, absolute garbage

Fantastic adaption of the graphic novel. My only major complaints were the music (a lot of it was too goofy for the serious subject matter), makeup like Nixon's just seemed too odd, and the ending dragged on too long. After the reveal, they should have tightened it up a bit. The first 2 hours+ FLEW by, though.

Honestly, I think that people who weren't alive (or weren't old enough to remember) the 80s will have a harder time "getting" this story. Without the understanding about the ever-present fear of nuclear war (which makes today's fear of random terrorism seem almost pussyish), it's hard to understand the choice the heroes make at the end of the movie.

However, I see this movie DYING in the theaters in the coming weeks, when the novel fanbase/curious watcher traffic dries up.

The friend I went with said it best -- this is a movie that's awesome to see in the theater, but it will make a KILLING in DVD form, when people can rewatch/rewind the movie so they have a better chance of "getting it".

Even though I loved the film, I do agree that the sex scene was gratuitous. I love seeing boobs as much as the next guy (given the amount of man-ass and CGI dong we were subjected to for the rest of the film), but the sex scene reminded me of the the one in the second Matrix. It started off fine, then switch to uncomfortable, then got to ludicrous. With a few quick cuts, they could have EASILY gotten the same message across.

I'm with you Ziny, DK returns> Watchmen not even close.

The movie was way too damn long, and the main character is a god damn tool. They need to rethink Dr.Manhattans lack of pants. Rorschach kicked all kinds of ass, he fucked everyone up. Over all they needed to lose the hawk douche and just focus on Rorschach.

Posted By: Its ok (Guest)  on March 08, 2009 at 10:42 PM

This might be a loooooong shot, but what are the odds of a movie being made that's centered around Rorschach? It could maybe focus on him working on a case of his from when he was just starting out or something.

I don't believe Alan Moore ever made a comic like that and seeing as how he tends to not like any movies that are based off of his books, could he have the power to nix the idea completely? If this movie makes an assload of money I could certainly see a sequel of sorts in the works, despite there not being sequel in graphic novel form.

There is a movie centered around that character. Ever heard of "Taxi Driver"?

Loved this. Only problem was the "Hallelujah" during the love scene. If I NEVER hear that song again, that would be great.

This movie was wonderful. Complex plot, social commentary from very different points of view, great characters, great action, amazing visuals, outstanding opening credits sequence. Worth every penny.

just seen this tonight and it was borrrringggggg as all hell. my buddy liked it b/c he was up to date and new the novel and all that good stuff, but the casual movie goer (myself) would find it very slow paced, and very VERY long. and the one guy seemed like a blatant batman ripoff imo

I thought Watchmen was a fantastic movie. The length didn't bother me. I didn't realize it was as long as it was. It seemed to fly by despite the slow pace. I often complain about the ADD nature of many films nowadays. Lucky for me, this was a throwback to what I consider the old days.

If you don't like the movie, hey...that's your thing. I loved the film and only feel cheated because I didn't catch it on IMAX first.

I would rate it 3.5/4 out of 5. It was one of the best comic book adaptations I've witnessed.
